Enrichment
Like Years 7-11, our 6th form also have plenty of enrichment opportunities to get involved in:
European Youth Parliament
The European Youth Parliament (EYP) operates as a network of independent youth organisations across 40 European countries, focusing mainly on debate competitions. EYPUK organises regional and national forums and conferences throughout the UK. The most successful school teams from National Sessions are chosen to represent the UK at International Sessions and Forums, which take place across the EYP network. The EYP serves as a major platform in Europe for youth political debate, intercultural experiences, European civic education, and exchanging ideas.
KS3 showcase
The KS3 challenge and enrichment showcase is an annual event where students from across KS3 are invited to share projects of a given theme each year. The students are free to create projects in any format they want, and these range from models to poster presentations and multimedia presentations.
RVHS Exposed
The school magazine is published each term and is contributed to by students from year 7 to year 13. We meet every term to discuss what the theme of the upcoming magazine should be and following this, as a collaborative effort, we decide what each student is going to contribute. We have an amazing and dedicated team that selects topics to explore and once this happens, they research, write-up and create items that are then listed within the magazine itself. In the past, students have written news articles, speeches and fact-files. As well as this students have conducted independent research, created posters and have invented recipes for the magazine. The school magazine is an excellent way of being creative and sharing your ideas with others.
University trips and workshops
There is a range of trips and visits to universities around the country every year. These include Oxbridge application day hosted at a Cambridge college. There are also visits to the University of Southampton and a large university fair at Bancroft’s School. During these visits, students are given valuable opportunities to learn about the UCAS application process for their chosen field and gain insights into how to get the most out of life at university.
Jack Petchy Speak Out
The Jack Petchey "Speak Out" Challenge is a prominent public speaking program primarily for Year 10 students across London and Essex. Its aim is to empower young people by developing their communication skills, confidence, and providing a platform for them to share their ideas and perspectives on topics they are passionate about.
The program typically involves expert-led, interactive in-school workshops where students learn public speaking techniques, write, and deliver their own speeches. Following the workshops, selected students progress through a competition structure, from school-level Assembly Finals to Regional Finals, Semi-Finals, and ultimately a Grand Final held on a West End stage in London. This initiative helps students to articulate their views effectively, gain self-esteem, and improve their prospects in education and employment.
Super Curricular Lectures (Year 12 and 13)
The Super Curricular Lectures (SCLs) are academic lectures that we offer to students in years 7-9 as a way of allowing them to experience what a university lecture might be like. During these sessions, which take place during P1 (form time), staff deliver academic lectures to students to provide them with an insight into a range of different occupations that they might be interested in to inspire students and their future careers. Some staff have explored topics of interest and hobbies as well. Last year students from year 12 were given the exciting opportunity to lead on these sessions by delivering their own lectures to students. Due to the success of this, we will be having sixth form speakers each year presenting on topics that are prevalent to them: whether this be based on a part time job, a thesis statement they want to explore or a concept that fascinates them. Students will be approached on an individual basis and there will be opportunities to sign-up as well.
Bar Mock Trial (Years 10-13)
Students in Years 10-13 have an opportunity to act out a scenario for a likely court case; whereby they can choose various roles from a barrister, court clerk and many others to do with the law system. The students prepare for this during school hours and then enter a competition at a local crown court. This allows students to gain experience in the British Law system.
