Rewards
Roding Valley High School believes in rewarding effort, recognising achievement and encouraging pupils to aspire to exceed our expectations. Rewards are a very powerful tool for staff to use. A pupil, whose achievements are recognised in any way, whether publicly or in private, is more likely to make a positive impact within the Roding Valley community.

At the end of each term we celebrate the success of many students in each year group for a variety of reasons, such as those who have outstanding attendance, those who show excellent hard work in particular faculties, sporting achievement and dedication and/or contribution to school life. Reward prize draws will also take place in assemblies throughout the year, linked to achievement in curriculum-based programs such as Bedrock and Sparx. Heads of Year also work to recognise successful students in each assembly.
At the end of Autumn and Summer Term, selected students are invited to our Rewards Fair. This typically takes place over two periods in the last week of the term.
The next scheduled Rewards Fair is Wednesday 17th December 2025.
- Students are invited for a variety of reasons, such as:
- House Point Totals
- Nominations from the SEND Dept
- Student Leadership
- Nominations from their HOY/Tutors
- Bedrock Success
- Academic and Sporting Achievement
During the Rewards Fair, there are activities led by the student body for everyone to take part in. These are free activities.Ongoing, we will look to make this event ‘bigger and better’, with a wider variety of activities and food options.
Alongside faculty awards, faculties are encouraged to rewards students through a variety of methods:
Staff are encouraged to praise students in lessons. This could be verbally or through comments in books when applicable and in line with policy.
Staff are encouraged to issue House points which add to a student’s overall total, leading to rewards. This also allows form tutors and Heads of Year to praise students for achievement in their monitoring of issued points.
Class teachers can also send monthly postcards home to recognise achievement in lessons.
Students who work hard consistently in subjects can be considered by their class teachers for a faculty award, given termly during celebration assemblies. These are given and acknowledged publicly.
Roding Valley High School places a huge degree of importance on excellent attendance. By being in school, students are able to flourish and succeed in our care and in conjunction with our teaching and learning. The local authority and government also recognise the importance of school attendance to a child’s success. Therefore it is important in school that we recognise students who have outstanding attendance to school. This takes place through termly attendance awards in celebration assemblies. Form tutors are also asked to acknowledge improved attendance through their conversations with their tutees.
Students with outstanding attendance over a year can be rewarded through a place on an attendance trip.
The PE Department issue Half or Full colours for students who have shown sporting achievement or endeavour. These are issued during an awards night, alongside trophies and individual awards.
Half Colours (end of KS3) and Full Colours (end of KS4) are awarded for consistent membership of a School team, County team or higher, excellent team spirit and/or leadership of a team.
The Creative Arts Faculty also issue Half Colours and Full Colours for Performing Arts – performance, band membership, etc.
Public displays celebrating success and achievement are extremely powerful. Monitors in school may display examples of pupil success. Departments aim to celebrate and display success within their faculties. These could include examples of work, progress or achievement. This could also include uniform badges and tie
